Almost everyone in town believes that Sheriff Calder is essentially Val Rogers' puppet. Rogers' son is anxious when he learns that local criminal Bubber Reeves has escaped prison because he is having an affair with Reeves' wife. It appears that many other residents of the city believe they may have cause to fear Reeves. Calder's objective is to rescue Reeves without harming him. In his pursuit of justice, Calder will have to contend with the strong Rogers on the one hand and mob violence on the other.
