The Carpetbaggers

The Carpetbaggers is an American movie from 1964. It stars George Peppard as a character based on Howard Hughes and Alan Ladd as a former western gunslinger who became an actor under the name Nevada Smith. The following year, Steve McQueen played Nevada Smith in a prequel to the movie. Carroll Baker played an actress based on Jean Harlow, who was in John Hughes's epic film Hell's Angels. The Carpetbaggers was Alan Ladd's last movie. It was directed by Edward Dmytryk and filmed in 70mm. Alan Ladd died a few months before it came out. In the movie, George Peppard plays a hard-driving industrialist who is a bit like Howard Hughes. While he builds planes, directs movies, and breaks hearts, his friends and lovers try to reach his human side, but they find it hard to do. The title of the movie is a metaphor for self-promoting tycoons who quickly take over a company's finances, impose dictatorial rules for short-term profits, and then move on to greener pastures.
