It's located in a remote corner of the Mojave Desert, amidst dusty tumbleweeds and rangy Joshua Trees, and it's an anomaly: a high school where educators believe that empathy, life skills, and the consistency of a caring adult are the differences that will give at-risk students command of their futures. In order to ensure that students arrive at school on time, administrator Vonda Viland contacts them at the crack of dawn on any given day. And what if they require transportation? She'll be there to take them up. Vonda is well-aware of each student's difficulties and works relentlessly to help them overcome them, never instilling false hope in them. Given her school's increasing graduation rate, it appears that her ideology, which blends loving compassion with realism, is effective.
