Ahmad ibn Fadlan, a Muslim diplomat who had been banished from his native country, finds himself in the company of Vikings. Ibn Fadlan's initial reaction to the manner in which the Norsemen conducted themselves was one of irritation; nevertheless, as time goes on, he comes to respect the Norsemen despite their crude behavior.
