It's the summer of 1984. This Texas community near Wichita Falls is preparing for its centennial, 30 years after Duane captained the high school football team and Jacy was crowned homecoming queen. Oil prices are down, banks are failing, and Duane is in debt to the tune of $12 million. While his wife, Karla, overindulges, his children are perpetually in trouble, and he tom-cats around with the spouses of his colleagues and acquaintances. Jacy has returned to her hometown after a somewhat successful acting career, a year in Italy, and the death of her kid, among other things. Most people believe Duane and Jacy will rekindle their romance from high school. Aside from that, Sonny appears to be "weary in his head," which raises concerns about his physical wellbeing.
