Tammy leaves the Mississippi River for college, where she develops a relationship with Tom Freeman (John Gavin). Sandra Dee takes the place of Debbie Reynolds in this and the subsequent Tammy films. Both the new theme song, "Tammy Tell Me True," and the character of Mrs. Annie Call, played by veteran Beulah Bondi, are introduced in this film. Mrs. Call eventually moves in with Tammy at the Ellen B., serving as the impetus for the events shown in the subsequent film, "Tammy and the Doctor."
