Alec, Billy, Jules, Kevin, Kirby, Leslie, and Wendy are seven college pals who are still trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives and their friendships after college. When Alec, a political aspirant and Leslie's fiance, changed his political affiliation from Democrat to Republican, Leslie was shocked. Leslie, on the other hand, is a self-starter with a strong work ethic. To her, figuring out who she is as a person before making a long-term commitment to another person is a prerequisite to getting married. However, Alec and Leslie have made the decision to live together. In his mind, Alec's behavior is OK because Leslie isn't going to marry him. Their local bar, St. Elmo's Bar, is where Kirby works as a waiter while he studies to become a lawyer. Kevin is a struggling writer. In terms of romance, they couldn't be more different.
