After the Indians kill Custer and the 7th Cavalry, everyone expects the worst. Capt. Nathan Brittles is told to go on patrol, but he also has to take the wife of the Fort's commanding officer, Abby Allshard, and her niece, the pretty Olivia Dandridge, who are being evacuated for their own safety. Brittles is about to retire in a few days, and two young officers in the Company, Lt. Flint Cohill and 2nd Lt. Ross Pennell, have their eyes on Olivia. She has started wearing a yellow ribbon in her hair, which is a sign that she has a boyfriend in the Cavalry, but she won't say who.
