Saint Ralph
It's a charming and - at times - hilarious story that gets progressively heartbreaking as the minutes tick by in this Canadian-made comedy/drama set in Hamilton, Ontario in 1954, and it's well worth seeing. A fictional story about a troubled ninth student, Ralph (Adam Butcher), who is covertly living on his own at a hospital while his widowed, ill mother remains unconscious. As a result of his frequent encounters with Father Fitzpatrick (Gordon Pinsent), the principal of his all-boys Catholic school, Ralph is considered something of a joke among his peers until he decides to pull off a miracle that will potentially save his mother's life, which is to win the Boston Marathon. It was Father Hibbert (Campbell Scott) that inspired Ralph to take on his improbable quest, and it was his pure hope that brought Father Hibbert's cynicism out of the basement and into the light.
