The situation in Britain is deteriorating rapidly. A weak and ineffective Queen Cymbeline presides over a fractured and dismal Britain. Cymbeline's judgment is skewed as a result of the loss of two of her children, which has completely consumed her. Enraged that his only living successor, Innogen, married her childhood sweetheart Posthumus behind his back, Cymbeline exiled him from the kingdom. A character with an insatiable desire for power is hiding behind the throne, where they are hatching a plan to overthrow both of them by killing them. Innogen's husband is fooled into believing that she has been disloyal to him while they are living in exile, and as an act of irrational jealousy, he launches a plot to have her assassinated. Innogen, having been forewarned of the impending danger, flees the court incognito and embarks on a trip fraught with peril that will ultimately bring Cymbeline and a long-lost heir together and bring the young lovers together again.
