Remember the Sultana

Over 2000 Union soldiers, passengers and staff were crammed aboard the steamboat Sultana, certified to bring 376. Graft, greed, overcrowding, a badly preserved boat, as well as the Mississippi River was inflamed with springtime snowmelt conspired with each other to create a catastrophe. On April 27, 1865, the boat's central heating boilers took off, creating the worst maritime catastrophe in United States history.
