The owner of a distant sorghum winery, an elderly leper, passes away. Jiu'er, the leper's wife, and her boyfriend, whom the narrator refers to simply as "my Grandpa," take over the winery and establish an idealistic quasi-matriarchal commune led by Jiu'er. When the area is subjected to Japanese authority and the sorghum is cut down to make place for a road, the community rises up and opposes as the sorghum comes again.
