Italian wife and mother Giuliana desperately fights to keep her shaky grasp on reality from people around her, particularly her successful but inattentive husband, Ugo, in the midst of the country's industrial wastelands and poisonous factories. Corrado, an old friend of Ugo's who happens to be in town on business, is more sensitive to Giuliana's fears than the rest of the town's inhabitants. The two of them have an affair, but it does little to alleviate Giuliana's existential anxieties, and her mental health rapidly deteriorates as a result of her experiences.
