Reaching for the Moon

Elizabeth Bishop, a New York poet, travels to Rio de Janeiro in 1951 to meet Mary, a college friend. The sensuality of Brazil overwhelms the modest Elizabeth. She is the polar opposite of Mary's daring companion, architect Lota de Macedo Soares. Although initially cold, the architect soon makes a move for Elizabeth, and the poet eventually succumbs to Lota's overtures. Mary feels envious, but Lota is adamant about having both women at whatever cost. Their ménage à trois is thrown off balance when Lota begins work on her largest project to date, the design of Rio's Parque do Flamengo. Elizabeth accepts an academic teaching position in the United States, and the two ladies grow apart. Lota, who is normally full of self-assurance, is inconsolable. This endless triangle takes place against the backdrop of the 1964 military takeover. Bishop's emotional poetry are at the heart of a film that lavishly depicts a pivotal period in the life of this important Pulitzer Prize-winning poet.
