When Jack McKee and Cecil Colson are not stealing cattle from other people's herds in the wilds of Montana for a living, they are two bumbling drifters who make their living as drifters. In this story, Jack comes from a wealthy family but has abandoned them because he despises their affluent lifestyle, while Cecil is a Native American half-breed who is seeking his own route in life apart from his father. In order to make their place in the world, both hustle and rustle their way through the livestock held by wealthy ranch owner John Brown. After becoming dissatisfied with the fact that someone is slaughtering his cattle, John hires two ranch employees, Burt and Curt, to track out the rustlers. When Brown comes to the realization that he cannot rely on his two incompetent ranch hands, he turns to the grizzled former rustler Henry Beige for help in tracking down the cattle thieves, while Jack and Cecil remain one step ahead of them, unaware that their good fortune will run out at some point in the future.
