A New Orleans prostitute named Hattie (Susan Sarandon) meets a photographer named Bellocq (Keith Carradine) at her brothel one night. After he takes a picture of her, he becomes friends with her daughter, Violet, who is 12 years old (Brooke Shields). When Violet's mother's madam hires her as a nanny and Hattie leaves town to marry, Violet loses her innocence and becomes obsessed with finding Bellocq.
