After outgrowing their cramped New York apartment, drama critic Larry McKay, his wife Kay, and their four sons decide to move to an ancient farmhouse in the country. While Kay, a housewife, adjusts to suburban life, Larry continues to enjoy the theater and party culture of New York. When Larry describes a flirtatious encounter with Broadway star Deborah Vaughn, Kay immediately begins to have doubts about his commitment.
