Paulie
Paulie, a clever talking parrot, tells his ordeal to a Russian immigrant who works as a janitor at the scientific institute where he is ignored and housed. Paulie is presented as a gift to a young girl who stutters many years before the present. Eventually, he teaches the girl how to speak properly, but her father removes him because he believes she cannot discern between fiction and reality because she believes the bird can speak. Paulie has a series of encounters with a pawn shop owner, an elderly widow, a Mexican-American troubadour, and a would-be thief before he is transferred to the institute where he currently resides.
