Fang Lan, a teacher at a school in Hong Kong in the 1940s, gets caught up in the resistance efforts of a local guerilla group called Dongjiang during the Japanese occupation. One of the captains of the resistance group calls Fang in after he helped the group rescue novelist Mao Dun. As a courier, Fang's mother agrees to take her place. She then gets arrested for it. A childhood friend who now works for the Japanese occupiers helps Fang save her mother.
