In contrast to their father, Morten, who is a pious Danish farmer, his three kids hold radically divergent religious beliefs. Anders, the eldest son, shares his father's religious beliefs, while Mikkel, the eldest son, has lost his faith, and Johannes, the middle son, has grown insane and believes that he is Jesus Christ himself. As a result of Inger's difficult childbirth, Mikkel's faith is put to the test by everyone else's beliefs.
