Ann Smith and David Smith are a happy married couple who live in New York City, where they work. Ann asks David if he had to do it over, would he marry her? He says he wouldn't, to her surprise. Later that day, both of them learn that, because of a mistake they made when they married three years ago, they are not legally married. In the story, Ann doesn't tell David about this.
