César and his son Marius own the La Marine Bar in Marseilles' Old Port, where "Marius" is set. Marius's greatest desire is to board one of the boats that sail by his father's pub and travel to a distant continent. Fanny, a young and beautiful seafood vendor, has been secretly in love with Marius since she was a child. Marius, however, has never admitted his feelings for Fanny. A sailor visits La Marine one day and offers him a position on an exploration vessel. Fanny reveals her love for Marius in an attempt to keep him at far and make him envious. This causes a battle between Marius and one of César's old friends, Panisse, a boat merchant who, despite his age, has been courting Fanny for some time. Marius, torn between the lure of the sea and his love for her, abandons his dream in order to be with Fanny, who offers herself to him. Marius changes his mind while César and Honorine, Fanny's mother, prepare for the wedding.
