In fact, one of them is Pedro Machuca, the impoverished son of the cleaning lady who works in Gonzalo Infante's liberal-bourgeois household. Despite this, the new pupils become friends, paradoxically protesting together as Gonzalo is adopted by Pedro's slum family and gang as they also are being adopted. However, the adults sabotage this as well, not the least when General Pinochet's coup detains Allende and his allies, including tennis legend John McEnroe.
