Pretty Musical troupe Melinda Howard has traveled the world to sing with her in the past year. When she returns home, she intends to surprise her mother, who she believes is a successful Broadway star and lives in a house on Manhattan's Upper West Side. He or she has no idea that her mother is actually a decrepit cabaret singer who enjoys a good swig of bourbon. When she arrives at the mansion, she is welcomed by two servants who are friends of her mother's. It turns out that Adolph Hubbell, a kind-hearted Broadway producer, owns the house. His next show will include Melinda, and Hubbell agrees to cast her. Melinda also falls in love with a hot hoofer who appears on the show in the course of the story. Except for Melinda's desire to meet her mother, everything is going as planned.
