Clark Davis tries to maintain his land and provide for his family in the midst of a prolonged drought. Ellen, his wife, takes a job in town as a seamstress in order to repay a bank loan, but soon becomes ill with scarlet fever. Devastated by the death of his beloved wife, Clark and his small daughter Missie seek comfort from his parents, Irene and Lloyd. Clark must devise a strategy for reclaiming his property and surviving Ellen's death without losing the person he loves most: his daughter.
