Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty rules over China in the early eleventh century, when the film is set. Amidst all of this, the Emperor of the Song Dynasty focuses on his personal pleasures rather than his duties as head of state. The Western Xia state's soldiers are advancing on the Song Dynasty. An whole generation of the Yang clan has dedicated their lives to defending the Song Empire from foreign invaders, and Yang Zongbao is their lone survivor. When the traitorous Imperial Tutor Pang refuses to send reinforcements to aid him, he appears to have tragically died in battle. Mu Guiying, Yang Zongbao's bereaved wife, leads the other widows of the Yang clan into battle to carry on the tradition of their husbands' deaths.
