In order to combat the skyrocketing crime rates that the beginning of the Meiji period brought about, an impenetrable jail known as the Gokumonjou was built in the center of a massive lake. The well-known Kumou brothers, Tenka, Soramaru, and Chuutarou, are the ones in charge of operating the ferry. Tenka is the oddball patriarch of the family, and Soramaru and Chuutarou are the reckless but honorable middle and youngest sons. The three of them, together with their housekeeper Shirasu Kinjou, have a relatively pleasant life in the often foggy town of Oumi, despite the gloomy nature of the work that they do. But buried in the long history of Oumi is the horrific legend of the "Orochi," a serpentine beast that rises once every three hundred years in a human vessel. Unbeknownst to Soramaru and Chuutarou, the actual job of the Kumou family is to lock away the Orochi before it completely revives; if they fail to do so, the world would be thrown into chaos. In the midst of the monster's subsequent revival, the Kumou family will need to find the strength to continue laughing in spite of the storm clouds.
