Iraqi rebels loyal to Shiite leader Muktada As-Sadr launched an insurrection in the Polish zone on April 3, 2004, during the Ashura festival. Under the command of Lieutenant colonel Grzegorz Kaliciak, the Poles, along with Bulgarian forces and Iraqi police, were tasked with defending City Hall. The conflict grew to become Poland's largest since World War II. Although roughly 80 rebels were killed in a counter-attack, no friendly soldiers were killed.
