In a little village in the countryside of France, an elderly man and the sole relative he has left cast their envious gaze on the vacant land that lies adjacent to their home. They are disappointed to learn that the man who has inherited the property will be moving in because they require the water from the spring in order to cultivate their flowers. They dig a dam across the spring and watch as their new neighbor struggles through the dry heat of summer to keep his crops watered using wells located further away. They are only concerned with obtaining the water, despite the fact that they can see that his desperate efforts are having a negative impact not only on his physical health but also on the hearts of his wife and daughter.
