Jack is born on the coldest day of the year in Scotland, in 1874. His heart quits beating as a result of the freezing temperatures. It is only through the efforts of the responsible midwife in Edinburgh that he is saved by substituting his heart with a clock. As a result, he survives and continues to be under the protection of the midwife. However, he must avoid being enraged or enthusiastic because doing so puts his life in peril by causing his clock to cease working. Even worse, when he grows up, he will have to accept the truth that he will never be able to fall in love because doing so will break his fragile heart.
