Ironweed
Located in the state of New York, Albany Halloween, 1938. Both Francis Phelan and Helen Archer have returned to the city in which they were born but have chosen to live as bums. He was a major league pitcher, and she was a radio performer. They are surrounded by death: she is ill, a friend of theirs has cancer, he digs graves in the cemetery and visits the grave of his baby son who he dropped; glimpses of his past, including the ghosts of two men he killed, torment him. Later that night, while out drinking, Helen gives a bar singing a shot. The following day, Fran makes a trip to see his wife, children, and grandson. His options are limited, and he ultimately decides to leave. After retrieving their belongings from storage, Helen looks for a motel. The film examines their sense of justice and loyalty in the midst of their transgressions and negligent behavior.
