In 1944, the castaway Marine Corporal Allison drifts in a raft to Tuasiva Island in the South Pacific, where he meets Sister Angela. She informs him that she is the only person on the island and that she was abandoned by the runaway boat to Fiji Island while looking for the local priest. Their idyllic life on the island, complete with water, fish, and fruits, comes to an end when the Japanese arrive to build a base, forcing Allison and the nun to hide in a cave. The crude marine supplies them with what they need to survive and falls in love with the nun.
