Le Ly lives in a small Vietnamese village where the peace is shattered by the outbreak of war. The village is nearly destroyed after being caught between the Viet Cong and the South Vietnamese army. Le Ly decides to flee after being brutalized and raped. She leaves for the city, surviving desperate situations but still surviving. She eventually meets a US Marine named Steve Butler, who treats her well and tells her he wants to marry her.
