The late President Lyndon B. Johnson stated numerous times throughout his presidency that the eventual triumph in the Vietnam War rested on the United States military gaining the "hearts and minds" of the Vietnamese people. In this anti-war documentary, directed by Peter Davis and released while the Vietnam War was still in progress, Johnson's phrase is used in an ironic context. The film juxtaposes interviews with military figures such as U.S. Army Chief of Staff William C. Westmoreland with shocking scenes of violence and brutality on the battlefield.
