Men in India began capturing and taming elephants 5,000 years ago for battle, parades, and devotion. Still today, the young Makbul grows up in daily contact with the wild and domesticated elephants that live in the forest around his native village in southern India. Makbul goes against his mother's wishes to become a government-employed mahout, or elephant handler. Makbul cares for Vikrama, an elephant calf.
