Solange is depressed: she no longer smiles, eats little, and says little. Her fainting spells are frequent. Raoul, her husband, tries to save her by enlisting the help of a stranger, Stephane, to be her lover. Stephane, despite listening to Mozart and keeping every Pocket Book in alphabetical order, fails to cheer Solange up. She knits. She does housework. Everyone, including their vegetable vendor neighbor, agrees that she needs a child, but she is unable to conceive through either lover. The three take a job running a summer camp for kids, where they meet Christian, the precocious 13-year-old son of the local factory manager. Christian is the one who brings Solange back to life.
