Newt Knight, a farmer from Mississippi, enlists in the Confederate Army in 1863 and serves as a physician. As someone who is morally opposed to the institution of slavery, Knight would rather aid the injured than fight for the Union. In an effort to protect his family after the death of his nephew in combat, Newt goes back to Jones County, but he is quickly labeled as a deserter and an outlaw. When he was forced to flee, he found refuge with a group of slaves who had escaped and were hiding out in the swamps. Knight leads a rebellion that will irrevocably alter the course of history by forming an alliance with the other farmers and the slaves.
