Paulette, a little Parisian girl orphaned by a Nazi air strike, meets Michel, an older peasant boy, and the two become fast friends. As they build a burial site for Paulette's slain beloved dog, they strive to make sense of the chaotic and decaying world that surrounds them, while also attempting to cope with death.
