Erich von Stroheim stars as a phony count who lives high on the hog in Monte Carlo. He survives by extorting large sums of money from gullible married women who fall for his romantic charms. Their most recent victim is the wife of an American financier, played by an actress who insisted on being billed as Miss DuPont. Von Stroheim's attempts to seduce this particular foolish wife are foiled at every turn, and the count eventually gets his comeuppance.
