There are tensions between Yisroel "Izzy" Jonigkeyt, a Chassidic Jew from Crown Heights and Polish-born Catholic buddy Marek Wisniewski as they travel to San Francisco to find out why an iconoclast in the Bay Area art world named Harry Kierk wants to ruin a lifetime's worth of his own work. During the course of their visit, Izzy and Marek learn for the first time that Kierk's deep historical baggage is interfering with their intriguing connection, and they soon come to realize why Kierk is driven to destruction. Continued contacts with Marek's vaguely anti-Semitic cousin Irek (who serves as their only point of contact with Kierk) only serve to exacerbate the already-existing tensions.
