Double Suicide of Sonezaki

In Japan, the act of taking one's own life has a long tradition of being utilized as a means of social protest. In the year 1703, the story of this movie takes place, the culture of the samurai is being altered as a result of the rise of a new merchant class. Certain aspects of the social contract are showing signs of unraveling, and some dishonest individuals took unfair advantage of these shifts in the social order before it could be re-established. In this tale, a wealthy businessman provides an I.O.U. to his clerk instead of paying him wages. When the destitute clerk presents the paper to the merchant at the agreed upon time asking for payment, the guy jumps into a frenzy and says he never wrote it and thinks the clerk is trying to scam him. The situation escalates from bad to worse for the clerk. After that, he orders his goons to bash the clerk and takes care of business himself.
