Marshal Frank Patch is a traditional lawman in the Texas town of Cottownwood Springs at the turn of the twentieth century, despite the fact that the town is keen to become modern. In the aftermath of his self-defense killing of the inebriated Luke Mills, the town's officials decide it's time for a change. The town has asked Patch to retire, but he refuses, claiming that when he was hired, the municipality promised him that he would have the job for as long as he desired. Afraid that Patch is privy to all of their darkest secrets, city leaders determine that old-fashioned violence is their only option for ridding themselves of him.
