As Agnes progressively passes away from cancer, her sisters are so engrossed in their own emotional suffering that they are unable to offer her the necessary assistance. Maria is tortured with remorse over her husband's suicide, which was precipitated by his discovery of her adulterous affair. Self-loathing and suicidal Karin appears repulsed by her sister. Only Anna, the extremely religious maid who lost her little child, appears capable of offering Agnes consolation and sympathy.
