Charlotte Salomon, a young German-Jewish painter, comes of age in Berlin on the eve of WWII. She aspires to be an artist since she is a very imaginative and gifted young woman. Her first love congratulates her on her talent, which encourages her to keep going. She flees to the protection of the South of France when anti-Semitic policies incite violent mobs. She picks up her paintbrush again and falls in love with a new man there. However, her work is once again disrupted by a family tragedy, which discloses an even darker secret. She starts on the huge undertaking of painting her life story, believing that only an incredible act will save her.
