Two Britons, inventor Hengist Pod and Horse, a strong and crafty fighter, are captured and enslaved by invading Romans and transported to the capital city of Rome, where they are executed. Hengist is mistaken for a combatant during one of their first interactions in Rome, and he ends up being enlisted into the Royal Guard to protect Cleopatra as a result of that encounter.
