The year is 1936 in Russia, and revolutionary hero Colonel Kotov is enjoying an idyllic summer at his dacha with his young wife and six-year-old daughter Nadia, as well as other members of his family and friends. It is the unannounced arrival of Cousin Dmitri from Moscow, who attracts the women, as well as the young Nadia, via games and pianistic brilliance, that causes things to change abruptly. Nevertheless, Kotov isn't deceived: this is the era of Stalin's repression, when telephone calls in the middle of the night portend doom, and he is well aware that Dmitri isn't making a social call...
