Thousands of years in the future, civilization has evolved into its final Net-based form. Because of a "infection" that occurred in the past, the automated systems have become out of control, resulting in a multi-leveled city structure that duplicates itself indefinitely in every direction. Having lost access to the city's controls, humanity is now being hunted down and exterminated by the Safeguard, a city-wide defensive system. A small enclave known as the Electro-Fishers, located in a remote area of the city, is on the verge of extinction due to the danger of the Safeguard and depleting food sources. As Zuru embarks on a trek to obtain food for her town, an observation tower detects her presence and summons a Safeguard pack to destroy the threat. Zuru is unwittingly responsible for the village's death. Now that her comrades have been killed and all escape routes have been closed to her, she is reliant on the surprising appearance of Killy the Wanderer, who is on a quest to find the Net Terminal Genes, which holds the secret to restoring order in the universe.
