Three college freshmen are brought together by a shared desire to achieve the American dream during the 1980s economic reform period. Wang Yang is an idealistic romantic poet and Cheng Dongqing a hillbilly who refuses to accept his fate of being a farmer. They are opposed to each other. Xiaojun is the first person from China to acquire a visa to study in the United States. For the love of his life, Yang resolves to stay in China. Dongqing keeps getting turned away from the US Embassy. For whatever reason, he grudgingly accepts the position of English lecturer at the university, but he is later sacked for offering private tutorials. Xiaojun is forced to work as a busboy in a diner across the Pacific since he can't find a respectable job.
