At the start of World War I, Paul Baumer is a young German patriot who is excited to fight for his country. Propaganda at school made him and his friends want to join the army right away. But soon, the horrors of war become too much for Paul to bear, and as his friends die or are seriously injured, he wonders if it makes sense to fight over a few hundred yards of war-torn land.
