Nick, 12, lives with his uncle Murray, who is like Mr.Micawber from Dickens. Murray always hopes that something won't happen. It turns out that there is a social worker, who falls in love with Murray and a little bit with Nick, as well. To keep Nick, the child welfare people want Murray to become a more traditional man as a condition for him keeping him. His nephew, who has always admired his uncle's unconventional way of life, tries to be the middleman and try to find a solution. In the end, the uncle caved in to society in order to save the relationship.
